School Director – João  Pires

Welcome to the School of Education (ESE) of the Polytechnic University of Setúbal (IPS), a community where “it’s worth being here”, as sung in our Anthem.

The ESE/IPS began its activity in 1985 and its origins lay in the in-service professionalization and continuous training of primary and secondary school teachers and educators. Subsequently, in 1987, it began offering bachelor’s degrees in initial training for kindergarten teachers and elementary school teachers.

After operating in temporary premises for the first few years of its existence, ESE/IPS inaugurated the building where we are today on June 29, 1993. This marvelous piece of architecture, designed by the architect Siza Vieira, was awarded the National Grand Prize for Architecture that same year and over the years has been the stage for building memories and affections that we feel are ours and that enrich our identity.

The defense, preservation and conservation of this architectural heritage is therefore the responsibility of each and every one of us as a community, so that we can continue to build individual and collective memories here.

Based on its mission to contribute to “human, cultural and scientific training”, as set out in its Mission Statement, ESE/IPS has developed a varied range of training courses in other scientific and professional areas in response to the training and specialization needs of the Setúbal region, comprising various bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, postgraduate courses and higher professional technical courses.
