Teaching Methods

This course adopts an active learning approach by engaging students, individually or in groups, in activities designed to deepen their knowledge, values, and attitudes through reflection, analysis, and critical evaluation of the history of Portugal and its connection to local, regional, and global contexts.

Priority is given to approaches based on the development of active and challenging tasks applied within a collaborative learning community.

The work processes will involve task completion; report writing; reading, discussing, and analyzing scientific articles/texts; researching and producing summaries on topics; using digital databases and other digital educational resources; and field trips and/or study visits.

The theoretical framework sessions, using diverse methodologies, prioritize guided discussion on specific topics, based on bibliographies and documents in various formats and/or the use of complementary libraries and/or digital archives. In this regard, and from a learning community perspective, the active and reflective participation of students is encouraged in the theoretical sessions and in the practical activities carried out during the theoretical-practical sessions or independently.

The assimilation of the findings of the latest historical research, the promotion of the use of diverse concepts, and the critical examination of (more or less) familiar and/or studied situations-all integrated into the prescribed curriculum-will also be enhanced by a critical analysis of the construction and legitimization of historical knowledge and collective memory, through guided discussion of themes, based on the analysis of bibliographies and documents in various formats. The acquisition of knowledge and reflection on the local environment (toponymy, vestiges and traditions, uncovering of invisibilities, oral history, ...), primary sources, and the potential of local history as a reference for understanding and knowledge of the past will be framed within theoretical-practical and practical sessions in a fieldwork model. Tutorial guidance will be provided primarily to support the development of research projects.

Content Explanation

The structure of the syllabus allows a balanced, gradual, articulated and sustained acquisition of knowledge, based on the results of the
most recent research carried out on the History of Portugal, by researchers from different areas, nationalities and ideological conceptions.
The syllabus aims to provide students with a set of fundamental knowledge and references that allow for a diachronic and synchronic
reading of the phenomena and processes of the History of Portugal. At the same time, it allows them to learn, discuss and reflect about the
past and recent times, the historical events and processes of a country that went from being a peripheral country to a colonial country and,
today, a European country. The use of recent research, in the classroom context and in the work to be carried out, allows for reflection on
the various discourses present in historical narratives.

Methodology Explanation

The approach of the contents of History of Portugal, assume that students have mastered them, although almost always from a so-called
traditional perspective, which is questioned here, reflecting on criteria of construction and legitimacy. Thus, teaching methodologies aim to
confront students with historical knowledge through reading and analyzing historical research works in order to appropriate fundamental and
current theoretical aspects of this area of knowledge.
Contact with other ways of reading the past - “from below” - is provided in order to understand and intervene in the present. Priority is given
to approaches that, always based on updated classical and contemporary research, on any of the periods or themes in question, allow the
training of conscious educators and teachers, attentive to the evolution of historical thought and historiographical production, with a critical
and active attitude of innovation and research.
The systematic presentation of theoretical data on the topics under discussion requires reading, discussion and analysis sessions of texts or
other documents that allow for the identification and reflection on the main contents. The observation and analysis of documents and/or
sources of different types allows students to come into contact with a variety of documents, with clear theoretical interpretative bases, from
different periods and from different researchers that highlight and delve deeper into the issues under discussion. In this way, students
demonstrate learning in the appropriation and use of different concepts and in the problematization of events, characters, processes or
historical spaces.
Encouraging students to carry out research using primary sources, preferably related to local history, is of great importance in all the work
produced by students. This encourages the appropriation of methods specific to historical research, reflection on the potential of local
resources, communities and urban spaces for the construction of local, regional and national history. It also encourages the ability to design
and plan research projects that integrate, methodologically and theoretically, up-to-date historiography. Tutoring sessions play a
fundamental role in the preparation and monitoring of these research projects.
