Objectives

Knows the originality of the national territory from a physical and human point of view
Knows the originality of Portugal's geographical position and the temporal evolution of its insertion in international systems and networks at
various scales
Recognizes and identifies the main Portuguese regions, their geographical and dynamic characteristics
Knows the characteristics of the national urban network and is able to analyze it from the point of view of the main geographical theories,
with particular emphasis on the theory of Central Places
Understands Portugal's insertion in the European Union and the world, and discusses it in light of changes in global geopolitics
Knows the main problems of Portuguese Spatial Planning and the recommended solutions
Knows the main morphological, functional characteristics of Portuguese cities
Knows the environmental problems of the territory and problematizes them taking into account the climatic characteristics and its
biophysical structure
Teaching Methods

An active learning perspective is assumed, based on the implementation of sessions based on active tasks applied in a collaborative
learning community context.
The work processes will involve solving tasks; writing reports; reading, discussing and analyzing scientific articles/texts in groups and in the
class group; research and production of summaries on topics; use of digital databases and other digital educational resources; field trips
and/or study visits.

Location and insertion in global networks over time
The influence of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic on physical and human characteristics
Portuguese expansion and globalization

Content Explanation

The syllabus is in line with the learning objectives, as evidenced by the choice of topics and the constant focus on spatial analysis.
The question of the originality of Portugal's location, European Finisterre, but a focal point in the 16th to 19th centuries, the importance of
the Atlantic and Mediterranean oceans, in the organization of the landscape and in its commercial and maritime vocation, is consistent with
the related learning objectives of the importance of Portugal in the world and its insertion in the various global networks and systems.
The analysis of regional examples, their dominant physical characteristics and the process of urban coastalization allows us to analyze the
different influences of processes of global and local origin.
Finally, the emphasis given to Territorial Planning analyzes the problems caused by global origin factors, from climate change to changes in
demographic, economic, financial, political and social systems.
Methodology Explanation

The use of important themes from Portuguese Geography, many of which are hot topics, such as fires, new infrastructure proposals,
especially in the two metropolitan areas (airports, bridges, logistics centres, etc.), as well as geographical and historical issues, many of
which are extremely controversial, is in line with the objectives of the course unit, as they focus on the so-called differential spatiality (spatial
analysis) and the recognition of the characteristics of the Portuguese territory and its regional and international insertion in various time
periods.
On the other hand, the use of group work and individual tutoring encourages the development of essential social skills, as well as the
sharing of knowledge between students in what is intended to be a true collaborative learning community.
