Objectives
Reveals having scientific knowledge, using it appropriately to understand the natural and social environment and in the analysis and
discussion of problems that interrelate the natural and social world.
Uses appropriate scientific language, distinguishing scientific discourse from common sense discourse.
Recognizes the importance of using conceptual and methodological instruments from science to understand students' life contexts.
It problematizes and argues fundamentally about the potentialities and limitations of human intervention in the natural and social
environment using available scientific knowledge.
Analyses controversial situations related to the sustainable development of society.
It integrates ecological, ethical and aesthetic values into its discourse and practices.
Appropriately uses communication and information technologies, supports and instruments. -
Teaching Methods
Program Management Strategies
Classes include theoretical presentations, practical activities, and discussion/debate sessions on overarching themes in education for sustainability.
The following learning activities are planned:
a) analysis of specific cases based on specialized literature;
b) participation in debates;
c) guided discussion of topics based on recent research findings in the fields of environment and development;
d) conducting documentary, laboratory, and field research activities;
e) presentation, discussion, and self-assessment of activities.
Tutorial Support
The planned tutorial support involves assisting groups with their assignments and providing individual support whenever necessary.

Environments and sustainable development:
- The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs);
- Natural and social environments: common and distinctive relationships and characteristics;
- Impacts of human activities on the environment;
- Analysis of controversial issues from political, economic, social, scientific and technological points of view.
Democracy and citizenship:
- Organization and distribution of population and resources;
- Resource management for the sustainable development of countries and regions;
- Institutions and their roles in the political organization of societies;
- Social/cultural differentiation - social inclusion and the reduction of inequalities.
Biological systems and sustainable lifestyles:
- The diversity of life and the functional systems of the human organism;
- Homeostasis: regulation of the dynamic balance of biological systems;
- Promotion of health and sustainable lifestyles. -
Content Explanation
This curricular unit aims to consolidate the scientific knowledge already acquired about the functioning of natural and social systems in
order to develop students' research and investigation skills, in particular, communication and argumentation skills in the face of real
problems, whether situated on a local or global scale. We sought to focus the program around integrative content associated with education
for sustainability to provide the development of skills transversal to natural and social sciences that develop recognition of the training need
in citizen intervention. -
Methodology Explanation
The methodologies adopted focus on the students' activities. The diversity of work processes aims to provide students with the opportunity
to deepen their knowledge and develop skills, attitudes and values leading to solid training around relevant issues within the scope of
natural sciences and social sciences.
The use of laboratory activities and real cases for study and work are methodologies that focus on the student and make reflection, sharing
and discussion on the topics covered possible, thus creating favourable conditions for students to mobilize appropriate scientific language in
practice, ability to analyse and argue. -
